Johnson Endorsement Belies Evans’ Stated Positions as Candidate for Congress

DENVER: After reports that Speaker Mike Johnson endorsed state Rep. Gabe Evans (R-Fort Lupton) in his primary bid for Congress, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, called on Evans to reject Johnson’s tainted endorsement.

“MAGA Mike Johnson is a fringe religious fundamentalist who has pushed a national abortion ban, and his endorsement confirms our worst suspicions that Gabe Evans’ assurances on the issue are worthless,” said ProgressNow executive director Sara Loflin. “We already know that in addition to not fully accepting the results of the 2020 presidential election, Gabe Evans also supported the overturn of Roe v. Wade and opposes abortion even in the case of rape and incest. What he now asks us to believe is that he would say no to MAGA Mike Johnson’s call for a national abortion ban once the question is called in Congress.”

Speaker Johnson has spent his career in and out of Congress working to limit or ban abortion, including through federal legislation outlawing the procedure as early as six weeks. State Rep. Gabe Evans himself has stated his position that he would outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest, if it was not necessary to save the mother’s life. As a candidate for Congress, Evans has affirmed his support for the repeal of Roe v. Wade, even as he hinted at opposition to a national ban. 

“There’s only one thing Gabe Evans can do something to assure Coloradans that his promises about a national abortion ban have meaning, and that’s to reject MAGA Mike Johnson’s endorsement,” added Loflin.
