DENVER: With Colorado lawmakers preparing to consider and swiftly reject a resolution from far-right House Republicans calling for the impeachment of Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, condemned this waste of time and state resources in fruitless pursuit of revenge on behalf of Donald Trump, and warned that the effort is likely to backfire with Colorado voters poised to reject Trump for a third time.
“We have seen Donald Trump’s insatiable appetite in carrying out personal vendettas, and now we are watching the 19-seat micro-minority carry out Trump’s agenda in trying to impeach Secretary Griswold,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Sara Loflin. “Secretary Griswold was a defendant in the case brought by Republican and independent Colorado voters seeking to implement the 14th Amendment and disqualify Trump for participating in an insurrection, and followed the law at every step as Trump v. Anderson wound its way through the courts. Jena Griswold is just as entitled to her personal opinion as Republican lawmakers who claim January 6th was a peaceful protest. Colorado’s Republican party truly doesn’t comprehend that officials can separate their personal opinions from their official responsibilities.”
“The far right believes this attack on Secretary Griswold is good for them politically, but that’s not what the polls say,” said Loflin. “Our latest Mountaineer poll shows that a solid majority of Coloradans approved of the lawsuit to disqualify Trump on 14th Amendment grounds. [1] Secretary Griswold faithfully carried out her duties as Secretary of State throughout the case, including restoring Trump to the ballot as soon as Trump filed his appeal. When pressed to explain the purpose of their impeachment resolution, Rep. Ryan Armagost admitted that it was to ‘help us in the next election cycle.’ Not only is the attack on Griswold as baseless as the collapsing impeachment effort against President Biden, the polls say the effort is destined to backfire with Colorado voters.”
“Rep. Gabe Evans, who has co-sponsored the resolution and sits on the House Judiciary Committee hearing the impeachment resolution today, is the most astounding of any Republican taking part in this unfounded witch hunt,” said Loflin. “Evans responded ‘no-ish’ when asked in a debate if he believed the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Evans made his support of Trump clear in the attempt by Republicans to rewrite the history of Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Americans for Prosperity-endorsed candidate Gabe Evans can’t have it both ways. The Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump is an insurrectionist and the U.S. Supreme Court did not overturn that finding. Does Gabe Evans really want to help Trump carry out his political vendetta against Jena Griswold for the crime of defending the Constitution?”
