Yesterday, the U.S. Senate wasted yet another chance to follow Colorado’s lead on gun safety.
Even worse, instead of expanding background checks on gun sales across the nation--like we did in Colorado in 2013--Sen. Cory Gardner worked with the gun lobby to kill the common-sense legislation.
In Colorado, we know that universal background checks on gun sales have stopped thousands of criminals from buying guns. With over 7,700 denials last year alone, murderers, rapists, and felons convicted of assault and robbery who tried to buy guns in Colorado were stopped. That’s why over 80% of the public consistently supports expanding background checks on gun sales in poll after poll. This is not controversial.
But even after another horrific mass shooting this month in Orlando, the gun lobby controls the Republican Party. Gardner has received an incredible $3.8 million from gun lobbyists and manufacturers, and yesterday he proved again who he stands for and who he stands against. Gardner voted against a federal background check law like Colorado’s, that would close the gun show loophole and keep weapons out of the hands of tens of thousands of violent criminals and domestic abusers across the country. He voted against preventing people who were on the terrorist watch list in the last five years from buying a gun. Gardner even voted against a watered-down Republican “alternative” bill to fund background checks without expanding them.
The American people are tired of excuses. The NRA and the gun makers clearly own right-wing lawmakers like Cory Gardner wholesale, but the overwhelming majority of voters who support expanding background checks are tired of being told that “nothing can be done” while Americans die every single day from gun violence.
Gardner may not be up for election in 2016, but plenty of his pro-gun colleagues will be. Remember Gardner’s votes yesterday in November, and make the gun lobby pay for their obstruction at every level of government.
That is one of the ways we will remember the victims of gun violence: in Orlando and across the nation.
