DENVER: Rep. Lauren Boebert took to Twitter this morning to defend rightwing podcaster Tony Hinchcliffe’s racist tirade at a rally for ex-President Donald Trump in New York City this past weekend. Even many Republicans have condemned Hinchcliffe’s remarks against Latinos and the island of Puerto Rico. Today, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive organization, calls on Republican Congressional candidate Gabe Evans to stand up to Boebert and call out her defense of Hinchcliffe’s racist denigration of Latinos everywhere.
“This weekend, the hatred toward women and unvarnished racism that dominates the MAGA movement on full display at Madison Square Garden horrified the nation and thrilled Lauren Boebert,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Sara Loflin. “Today, Boebert said that Tony Hinchcliffe’s sickening denigration of Latinos everywhere and Puerto Ricans in particular was a ‘spark’ that ‘rekindled’ Boebert’s ‘flame of freedom.’ Hinchcliffe called an island of millions of American citizens ‘floating garbage,’ and made remarks about Latino families that no one with a conscience can possibly condone.”
“As the grandson of a Latino immigrant to our country, how can Gabe Evans stand idly by while Lauren Boebert defends the indefensible racism openly targeting Latinos at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies?” asked Loflin. “At the 9NEWS debate, Gabe Evans repeatedly refused direct requests to condemn Donald Trump’s racist and dehumanizing remarks, even when it affected his own family, showing Colorado that Trump’s approval was more important to him than his own integrity. Then, Evans shared a stage with Boebert and Trump to repeat bald-faced lies about the City of Aurora that demonize Latino populations. How can Gabe Evans remain silent while Boebert and the Trump campaign appeal to the lowest common denominator of American politics, open racism against American citizens who happen to be Latino?”
“Trump’s disastrous New York City rally has become a turning point late in the presidential campaign, and it’s a moment for truth for Republican politicians like Gabe Evans trying to have it both ways on Trump’s unapologetic appeals to racism,” said Loflin. “If Gabe Evans can’t stand up for Latinos after what happened last weekend, it’s disqualifying cowardice when the nation needs leadership most.”
