DENVER: With the decision of a Trump-appointed judge in Texas to rescind the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, ProgressNow Executive Director Sara Lu Loflin issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision is further evidence Republicans lied when they said overturning Roe v. Wade just meant ‘rolling back abortion rights to the states’. They will not stop until they impose a national abortion ban, and if they can’t get it through Congress they’ll get it through Trump-McConnell-Cory Gardner judges and the courts. This will even affect states like Colorado where abortion access is explicitly protected in state law.

Mifepristone is safe and effective and has been used by more than five million people since the FDA approved it more than 20 years ago. I was one of them. Medication abortion has helped ensure that patients are able to make their own private medical decisions, and it has expanded access to reproductive health care, allowing people the ability to choose the method of abortion care that is best for them and their unique circumstances.

The mifepristone lawsuit was a cruel, politically motivated attack on abortion care access that has no basis in scientific or medical evidence. This case is setting a dangerous precedent that could extend to other FDA-approved medicines – like AIDS drugs and birth control.

Politicians and judges cannot substitute their own political agenda for the FDA’s medical and scientific recommendations – including on medication abortion. We hope that the FDA will take a serious look at the impact of this decision and whether it does in fact compel them to take immediate action.”
