DENVER: With the announcement that candidates Joe O’Dea, Barb Kirkmeyer, and Heidi Ganahl are welcoming NRSC Chairman Rick Scott to Thornton for a rally, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement.

“Joe O’Dea proudly told Republican primary voters he wanted to shrink Social Security and Medicare, but when that position became inconvenient for the general election, he’s tried to cover it up,” said ProgressNow Executive Director Sara Loflin. “Welcoming Florida Senator Rick Scott to Colorado today is a reminder that Social Security and Medicare are in grave danger with Joe O’Dea in the U.S. Senate.”

Sen. Rick Scott is the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and introduced an 11-point plan that proposed sunsetting Social Security and Medicare every five years. And like Rick Scott, Joe O’Dea has attempted to back away from his initial comments on those programs and gone the extra step of deploying a pro-Social Security privatization group to shield him on the issue with senior citizens.

“Today’s rally with Rick Scott is more proof that you can’t trust a word Joe O’Dea says,” added Loflin. “Joe O’Dea has been accused of discriminating against older employees in his own company, and he was crystal clear he was willing to come after the programs seniors rely on in their retirement. O’Dea’s platitudes are fake, his promises are fake, and the groups defending him are fake, but the threat he poses to Social Security and Medicare is very real.”
