DENVER: With ballots arriving in mailboxes across the state of Colorado for the November 2, 2021 elections, ProgressNow Colorado Executive Director Sara Loflin released the following statement urging Colorado voters to reject the “disastrously shortsighted” Amendment 78:
“Instead of offering solutions to the complex issues facing Colorado today—from the COVID-19 pandemic to an historic drought and wildfires—conservatives have proposed another disastrously short-sighted ballot measure: Amendment 78. This constitutional amendment would financially handcuff our state and leave us powerless to render help to fellow Coloradans in an emergency. It’s like seeing that your neighbor has gotten a papercut, and offering amputation in lieu of a Band-Aid.
Imagine if Amendment 78 had been in effect late last December, when the COVID-19 death rate was surging and Colorado was in desperate need of extra ventilators. Instead of Gov. Polis having the authority to obtain this equipment on an emergency basis, the state would have had to wait until the state government was back in session the following January to make it happen. How many hundreds more Coloradans might have died needlessly in the interim?
This dystopian nightmare is precisely what Colorado under Amendment 78 would look like, and it’s a testament to how tone-deaf the far right is to introduce this callous ballot measure in the middle of a still-ongoing pandemic. Coloradans are smarter than this cynical ploy. We need more responsiveness from our leaders, not less.”
