DENVER: As the Senate impeachment trial to decide the fate of President Donald Trump gets underway this week, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, condemned Sen. Cory Gardner’s almost immediate disregard for the promise he made to Colorado voters, a majority of whom favor Trump’s impeachment, to weigh all the facts as an “impartial” juror.

“Since news broke of Trump’s abuse of power to cheat in the next election, Cory Gardner has avoided saying whether he believed Trump did anything wrong. Now, Gardner is avoiding hearing evidence of Trump’s abuse of power,” said Manny Lopez del Rio of ProgressNow Colorado.

On Tuesday, Gardner voted with Mitch McConnell on 11 separate amendments offered in the Senate to call material witnesses and documentation that the Trump Administration has withheld from Congress. The amendments, with the exception of one, all passed on party-line votes. Just days earlier, Gardner was promising reporters in Colorado that he would judge Trump’s case impartially.

“The clock is running out for Gardner to do the right thing,” said Lopez del Rio. “The facts of Trump’s abuse of his office are clear to the world. The only remaining question is if Cory Gardner will stick to his usual tactics of avoidance or keep his promise to Colorado–though I think we have a pretty good idea of what we can expect.”
