DENVER: With ballot returns in Colorado showing clearly that Colorado voters have rejected Amendment 74, a controversial ballot measure that would have enriched the oil and gas industry at the direct expense of Colorado taxpayers, opponents of the measure representing a massive coalition of Republicans, Democrats, Independents, local governments, farmers, ranchers, teachers, police, chambers of commerce, labor unions, and concerned residents from across the state celebrated tonight’s victory.
“One of the worst ideas in modern Colorado political history—and that’s no small statement—went down in flames tonight,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Ian Silverii. “The oil and gas industry’s boundless greed and outright contempt for the families, schools, and business sitting above their precious minerals was dealt an historic defeat tonight. Coloradans won’t be tricked into surrendering our health and public safety to an industry that has demonstrated repeatedly they do not value the public over their profit margin. It’s time for the oil and gas industry’s disproportionate influence in Colorado politics to end, and tonight’s defeat of Amendment 74 is a step in the right direction.”
