DENVER: With a day of court drama unfolding, in which President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was found guilty of multiple felonies and Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen named Trump as a co-conspirator in campaign finance law violations, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, called on Colorado’s congressional delegation and U.S. Senators to immediately move to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller from retaliation by the White House. This comes as Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado travels with the President on Air Force One today to a campaign rally in West Virginia.
“The investigation into wrongdoing by President Trump is reaching a critical moment, and there is grave danger now that Trump will take improper action to halt Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Ian Silverii. “Michael Cohen is just the latest close Trump confidante to face criminal charges, a list that includes Trump’s former campaign adviser, campaign chair, and national security advisor. Cohen has now reportedly personally implicated the President. The closer this investigation gets to Trump, the greater the danger that Trump will abuse his power to halt the investigation.”
“Colorado Republicans have allowed Trump to get away with his threats against Mueller for too long,” said Silverii. “Just last week, Rep. Scott Tipton called for the investigation to conclude despite major continuing developments. Rep. Mike Coffman actually says the FBI is the party that should be investigated. As for Sen. Cory Gardner, he was photographed getting off Air Force One with Trump this afternoon. Colorado Republicans helped create the vacuum of accountability that has allowed Trump to thrive, and now they are too afraid for their own careers to do what’s right for the country.”
“When history writes the story of the Trump administration, those who stood by and did nothing while this constitutional crisis unfolds will not be remembered fondly,” said Silverii. “It is past time for Colorado Republicans to set aside their broken party and do what’s right for America.”
