DENVER: After President Donald Trump announced his choice of Brett Kavanaugh to succeed retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the United States Supreme Court, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, condemned Kavanaugh’s record of hostility toward abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, protections against workplace discrimination, and a broad range of other critical issues—and called on Senate Democrats to take any action possible to prevent his nomination from being confirmed.

“Tonight, Donald Trump set the final stage for the destruction of fundamental civil rights in the United States,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Ian Silverii. “But it is not just Donald Trump who stands at the precipice of this historic rollback of the rights of women, people of color, and LGBTQ Americans. Sen. Cory Gardner, who has supported attempts to ban abortion even in cases of rape or incest for most of his career in politics, is about to make a liar of everyone who assured the women of Colorado that Gardner’s election ‘would pose no threat to abortion rights.’ It is only now becoming clear just how wrong the pundits were in 2014.”

“Colorado has a long history of support for abortion rights, and a vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh would be an insult to the progress on women’s reproductive rights we have taken for granted in Colorado for decades,” said Silverii. “Colorado voters have rejected abortion bans on the ballot overwhelmingly and repeatedly, but a diehard minority of far-right politicians keeps coming back every year to try again. All the while, abortion rights advocates have warned that sweeping dismantlement of abortion rights is only one election away, and not to be fooled by interim failures. Today we know the truth: they were right, and abortion rights are in mortal danger.”

“The confirmation of Kavanaugh, a lifelong Republican political operative hand-picked by the Koch Brothers, will enshrine a right-wing majority on our highest court that will skew the law away from the values of the majority of Americans for generations to come,” said Silverii. “This is not what Americans want. American support women’s reproductive rights. Americans do not want basic health protections like coverage for pre-existing conditions repealed. Americans support voting rights, and the rights of workers to negotiate better conditions. Democrats in the U.S. Senate must take every lawful measure to stop this confirmation, and give the American people a voice in this selection in the upcoming midterm elections. If now is not the moment to stand up and fight, then when?”
