DENVER: Following Colorado Treasurer Walker Stapleton’s admission today that petitions his campaign submitted in support of his candidacy for governor are riddled with fraud, ProgressNow Colorado, the statewide progressive advocacy organization responsible for uncovering similar petition fraud in the 2016 Republican U.S. Senate race, demanded a full accounting of the decisions by Stapleton’s campaign that led to this latest electoral disaster.

“Two years ago, our organization helped uncover forged petitions that helped qualify Jon Keyser for the Republican U.S. Senate race,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Ian Silverii. “After petition fraud sank Keyser’s campaign and new laws were passed in 2017 to help prevent what happened in 2016 from ever happening again, now we see that Walker Stapleton has failed to learn the lesson. If Walker Stapleton can’t handle running a simple signature gathering operation, how can voters trust him to run the state of Colorado?”

“Walker Stapleton wants to pass the buck for his campaign’s actions, but he knew who he was hiring to collect his petitions,” said Silverii. “Instead of pointing fingers, it’s time for Stapleton to do the one thing he has never been able to do in his professional or personal life: take responsibility.”
