What you can do to fight back this week (February 26)

Last week, we sounded the alarm on three important events: a town hall with NRA favorite Rep. Mike Coffman, and action in the Colorado legislature on gun safety laws and protecting women’s abortion rights.

Each time, you showed up. And you made a huge difference.

Mike Coffman was once again besieged by constituents at his town hall demanding to know what he was going to do to protect Aurora from gun violence—and how Aurora’s representative in Congress could be Colorado’s #1 recipient of funding from the National Rifle Association. [1] Coffman had no good answers and endured yet another round of terrible press. Coffman’s Team did everything they could to make it as hard as possible for regular folks to attend his town hall, but once again you showed him that there is no silencing the resistance.

In the Colorado legislature, hundreds of people swarmed the state capitol last week to testify against foolish attempts to weaken Colorado’s common-sense gun laws, barely a week after the massacre at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High in Parkville, FL. Over six hours of testimony overwhelmingly against a bill to let people carry guns in schools put an end to that terrible idea—for now. Later in the week, women lined up to testify against a yet another attempt by the ultra right wing to make abortion a felony in Colorado.

As Trump as taught us all too well, we are only one election away from the worst case scenario, even in a great state like Colorado. Bad bills don’t die on their own. Politicians aren’t held accountable unless we step forward together and make it happen. Last week, once again, you did. And I’m grateful to live in a state full of people like you who fight back week after week whether the news cameras are rolling or not.
