DENVER: Responding to new reports Wednesday that Rep. Mike Coffman is the swing vote on the latest version of the “Trumpcare” health reform repeal bill, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:
“Rep. Mike Coffman made a promise to his constituents to protect Americans with pre-existing medical conditions, and he is about to break that promise,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Ian Silverii.
“Like so many millions of fellow Americans, I have a chronic medical condition that would have left me without coverage before the Affordable Care Act,” said Silverii. “While politicians in Washington play games with our healthcare, the decisions they make could have a devastating effect on my own family and families across Colorado. For us, this is not a game.”
“Before the ACA, I could not get health insurance due to a ‘pre-existing condition’ of pelvic congestive syndrome, which I was born with and had absolutely no control over,” said Rachel Wall, a resident of Rep. Coffman’s district. “It’s so crucial that I keep my coverage. It’s been an incredible asset to my life.”
“In states who choose to opt out of the Affordable Care Act’s protections under Trumpcare, patients with pre-existing conditions could face higher premiums, a return to caps on coverage, and loss of coverage if they can’t meet the higher financial burden without the help they receive today,” said Silverii. “It’s time for Mike Coffman to stop pretending these bad faith negotiations can produce a bill his constituents will support. If Coffman votes for a bill that allows any state to weaken the ACA’s protections for patients with pre-existing conditions, he will lose any remaining trust he has with the voters who elected him.”
