DENVER: Responding to a visit by Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan today to campaign with Rep. Mike Coffman, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:

“Mike Coffman spends most of his time these days running from his record and his party’s presidential nominee,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Ian Silverii. “Campaigning with House Speaker Paul Ryan is a reminder of who Mike Coffman really is. Coffman and Ryan have both attacked Social Security as a ‘Ponzi scheme,’ despite the fact that thousands of their own constituents depend on Social Security for their very survival. Hypocritically, Ryan even attended college using Social Security benefits he later tried to sell off to Wall Street in an ill conceived privatization scheme.”

“Mike Coffman supported Paul Ryan’s disastrous budget proposals in Congress, which would have slashed and privatized Medicare and Social Security benefits, as well as cut support for so many other services Coloradans rely on,” Silverii said. “Mike Coffman can’t claim to be ‘not like other Republicans’ when he’s literally in lock step with the architect of the Republican Party’s backward and destructive agenda. The Paul Ryan/Mike Coffman plan for America would hurt Colorado’s middle-class families. That’s a big reason why the last time Paul Ryan appeared on a ballot in Colorado, he lost big. In November, Colorado voters will make Mike Coffman pay for his and Paul Ryan’s extreme and out of touch agenda.”
