DENVER: As Florida Sen. Marco Rubio exited the 2016 presidential race after a crushing loss to controversial businessman Donald Trump, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:

“For months, the conservative establishment in Colorado has dodged questions about Donald Trump’s campaign by hiding behind Marco Rubio,” said ProgressNow Colorado political director Alan Franklin. “As of tonight, Mike Coffman, Cory Gardner, and Jon Keyser have no one left to hide behind. Marco Rubio’s campaign is over, and Trump is on an unstoppable path to the Republican presidential nomination.”

“With Trump’s opponents dropping out and the delegate math becoming more and more certain, conservatives must confront the truth of Trump’s rise to power in their midst,” said Franklin. “Trump’s hateful rhetoric is nothing more than a continuation of the outrageous political attacks we’ve seen against President Obama for over seven years. Every right-wing politician who benefited from the Tea Party, the ‘birthers,’ and seven years of obstruction and personal destruction in Washington must take responsibility for their part in Donald Trump’s rise.”

“The right must come to grips with the fact that Donald Trump did not rise to power in a vacuum,” said Franklin. “He was helped: by conservatives who put cheap politics ahead of the national interest, and lied to the conservative base to the point where they could not tell fact from fiction. Trump may wreck the Republican Party, but their own actions gave him the keys.”

“It’s past time for Gardner, Coffman, and Keyser to own the monster the GOP created,” said Franklin.
