DENVER: After Rep. Mike Coffman’s opponent in the 2016 elections called out his failure of oversight of the new Veterans Administration medical center project in Aurora, Colorado in a television interview this weekend, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, again called on Coffman to apologize for failing the veterans of Colorado.
“Morgan Carroll was right when she said that there is plenty of blame to go around for the failure by the federal government to complete the Aurora VA hospital on time and on budget,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “At this point, the only person who hasn’t yet apologized to the veterans of Colorado for failing to get this hospital built is the chairman of the congressional subcommittee in charge of oversight and investigations of VA construction projects: Rep. Mike Coffman.”
“For years, Mike Coffman has been in a position to blow the whistle on problems at the Aurora VA hospital, but it’s clear that there’s more he could have done far earlier in the process,” said Runyon-Harms. “The bottom line is that this project went a billion dollars over budget on Coffman’s watch. Coffman is chair of the VA’s oversight subcommittee. Our veterans deserve more than grandstanding at election time, while dodging the hard questions about where Coffman was when this project ran a billion dollars over its budget.”
“The Department of Defense wastes billions on useless fighter planes and submarines, and Coffman doesn’t bat an eye,” said Runyon-Harms. “This is a project that Mike Coffman has direct oversight responsibility for, and our veterans can’t go to his office for the care they need and deserve. It’s time for answers, not excuses, from the chair of the VA’s oversight subcommittee.”
