DENVER: Responding to the introduction by Colorado Republican Senators of legislation defining a “person” as “an unborn child at every stage of gestation from conception until live birth,” ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, condemned this latest attempt to exploit a tragedy to further an anti-abortion agenda.

“Everyone in Colorado is heartbroken over the horrific attack on Michelle Wilkins of Longmont,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “Thanks to the efforts of legislators two years ago to protect pregnant women, Colorado already has a law making unlawful termination of a pregnancy a felony crime. Justice will be served in this case. The alleged perpetrator of that attack faces multiple charges that will result in life imprisonment if convicted.”

“Despite this, Senate President Bill Cadman and his right wing colleagues are determined to use this tragedy as an excuse to push their anti-abortion agenda,” said Runyon-Harms. “The legislation introduced by Cadman yesterday ignores the will of Colorado voters who have repeatedly rejected so-called ‘Personhood’ abortion bans. This legislation begins with language giving fetuses rights ‘at every stage of gestation from conception until live birth.’ This is the same language used in the abortion ban initiatives that Coloradans have turned down at the polls over and over in recent years.”

“Everyone wants justice for Michelle Wilkins, but exploiting this tragedy to whittle away at women’s reproductive rights makes a mockery of the suffering she endured,” said Runyon-Harms. “We call on Cadman to stop these dishonest games with women’s rights, and let Colorado’s existing laws, which are some of the strongest in the country, provide the justice this case deserves.”
