DENVER: In a gubernatorial debate tonight between Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Republican Bob Beauprez, Beauprez claimed that inter-uterine devices (IUDs), a common form and one of the most effective forms of birth control, are “abortifacients”–meaning a type of birth control he would oppose along with his opposition to all abortions even in cases of rape or incest. In response, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:

“Beauprez’s outrageous statement tonight proves again that the ‘war on women’ is no myth,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “The fact that Bob Beauprez doesn’t believe that IUDs should be used by women is outrageous. IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control available and are directly responsible for a 40% decline in teen pregnancies in Colorado. This is a statistic that should be celebrated, yet Bob Beauprez wants to take us backward? It’s unbelievable.” [1]

“Republicans across Colorado are running from their support for banning abortion and even birth control,” said Runyon-Harms. “In tonight’s debate, Beauprez let his true colors show under pressure. Women know that, despite the insistence otherwise, the far right has an ugly agenda to roll back women’s reproductive rights. In the last few years, new restrictions on women have passed all over the nation. And now we know it’s on Beauprez’s mind too.”

“This could be the end for Bob Beauprez’s political career,” said Runyon-Harms. “But more than that, Beauprez’s words should serve as a warning to women everywhere that the ‘war on women’ is alive and well. We have to stay vigilant every day to protect our rights, because they really are under threat.”
