DENVER: As new press reports documented a secret strategy meeting of the infamous Koch brothers attended by Colorado Rep. Cory Gardner this summer, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, called on Gardner to immediately disclose what promise he made to donors in attendance to secure “third party” money for his race.

“Today’s revelations about Gardner’s secret meeting with the Koch brothers in California confirms what we already know about Con Man Cory–he’s for sale to the highest bidder,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “Gardner has a long history of pandering to the oil and gas industry. Now we know he expects something in return.”

In a story published at the Huffington Post, TIME Magazine, and several other outlets, Gardner’s attendance at a secret conference of high level conservative donors organized by Charles and David Koch in Dana Point, California was confirmed. Speaking on a panel of Senate candidates, “Gardner told attendees that his race would likely be decided by the presence of ‘third party’ money–an obvious pitch for generosity from the well-heeled crowd.” [1]

“It’s illegal for third party groups to coordinate with political campaigns, but here is Gardner flat-out asking for unaccountable third party money to flood Colorado elections,” said Runyon-Harms. “Gardner told the Koch brothers that he expected to raise millions less than his opponent, a difference he obviously expects to be made up with ‘third party money.’ Does Gardner ever care that coordination with outside groups is illegal? What did he promise the Koch Brothers and other wealthy donors in exchange?”

“Colorado needs leadership in Washington that cares about us, not the Koch brothers,” said Runyon-Harms. “We can’t let Cory Gardner sell our state down the river to win an election.”
