DENVER: Responding to allegations from Rep. Cory Gardner that a new TV ad highlighting his abysmal record on women’s reproductive choice is “misleading,” ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:

“What’s ‘misleading’ about an ad that states Cory Gardner has sponsored legislation to ban abortion even in cases of rape or incest? Nothing.” asked ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “Con Man Cory Gardner is trying to run away from his past, but he can’t hide from it–it’s part of his permanent record.”

A new TV ad released this week accuses Gardner of “promoting harsh anti-abortion laws,” including legislation to make all abortions in Colorado a felony [Colorado Senate Bill 07-143]. The ad also accuses Gardner of having “championed” a “crusade to outlaw birth control,” in reference to Gardner’s past public support for the Personhood amendments, which would have outlawed common forms of birth control in addition to banning all abortions in Colorado.

A KUSA-TV 9NEWS Truth Test by reporter Brandon Rittiman positively reviewed the ad in question today. [1]

“Gardner claims this new hard-hitting ad against him is ‘misleading,’ but the facts in the ad stand up to the truth test,” said Runyon-Harms. “Over 70% of Colorado voters repeatedly rejected the Personhood abortion bans–the same abortion ban Cory Gardner proudly told voters he worked to get on the ballot in 2010.”

“Gardner is running scared because he knows Colorado is a pro-choice state. The extreme positions he championed as a right-wing politician in a safe seat are unacceptable to moderate voters across the state,” said Runyon-Harms.

“The only ‘misleading’ going on here is Cory Gardner trying to con Colorado voters about his past,” Runyon-Harms said.
