DENVER: As Congressman Mike Coffman tries to distance himself from the movement to ban all abortion in Colorado, even in cases of rape and incest, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, called on Mike Coffman to apologize for years of support of the so-called ‘Personhood’ amendment.
“Career politician Mike Coffman has done everything he can to distract from his anti-woman record,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “But even as his staffers parse words for him to say he won’t support future Personhood amendments, he has never said he was wrong for doing so for years.”
Coffman supported the Personhood amendment as a congressional candidate in 2008 and 2010, [1; 2] despite numerous doctors and medical experts offering evidence that the measure could even ban common forms of birth control. [3; 4; 5; 6]
Coffman went so far as to clarify to a local radio show that he personally opposed abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, and received a 100% rating on Colorado Right to Life’s Candidate Questionnaire in 2008.
“Congressman Coffman can change his positions, but he can’t change his past,” added Runyon-Harms. “Make no mistake, Coffman’s reckless and extreme support for changing our constitution would have harmed Colorado women. He should come clean and apologize.”
