DENVER: Learning of plans by the gun lobby and far right political candidates to hold a protest just before kickoff Sunday of the AFC Championship game between the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, called on organizers to celebrate and cheer on the Denver Broncos instead of perpetuating anger and misinformation.

“This Sunday, Peyton Manning and the Broncos will attempt to avenge their loss earlier this year to the Patriots,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “It’s time for all Coloradans to ‘Unite in Orange,’ not rage on the steps of the state capitol against good laws that are saving lives.”

Just before the Denver Broncos kick off in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots at 1:00PM Sunday, an organization calling itself Gun Rights Across America is scheduled to hold a protest on the steps of the Colorado Capitol. Speakers at the rally include Greg Brophy and Tom Tancredo, Republican candidates for Governor, as well as Ken Buck and Owen Hill, Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate.

“The polls show that Coloradans overwhelmingly support the common sense gun safety laws, like background checks, passed by the General Assembly in 2013, and perhaps even more importantly, statistics released by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation show that these laws are working,” said Runyon-Harms. “Even if the gun lobby and the politicians beholden to them don’t agree, why spoil such a great occasion as our Broncos on the cusp of another Super Bowl with a misguided protest?”

“The fact is, any protest in Denver on a day when the Broncos are playing in the AFC Championship game is almost sure to be a bust,” said Runyon-Harms. “Instead of embarrassing themselves and alienating more Coloradans, we call on organizers of Sunday’s protest to ‘Unite in Orange’ with the rest of Colorado and support the Broncos.”
