DENVER: Following a dramatic confrontation yesterday at the end of a Denver Post recap forum on this year’s legislative session, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, called on GOP Colorado Senate Minority Leader Bill Cadman to apologize for his appalling treatment of the father of an Aurora shooting victim.

“Every Colorado citizen deserves better than the way this man, the father of a victim of the Aurora mass shooting last year, was treated by a sitting Republican lawmaker,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Amy Runyon-Harms. “To treat someone who has been through such profound tragedy so contemptuously is beyond unacceptable. We call on Cadman to immediately apologize for his outrageous conduct yesterday.”

At the end of an hour-long Denver Post forum on the recently-ended legislative session with Republican minority leaders from the House and Senate, in response to comments from Tom Sullivan, the father of Alex Sullivan who was murdered in the Aurora shootings, Senate Minority Leader Bill Cadman angrily declared “I’m done,” apparently upset that Sullivan had “accused him of lying.” Sullivan responded, “What I will tell you, sir, is that my son was murdered in the Aurora theater by a man who had bought a 100 round drum and murdered my son.” 1 2

“Senator Cadman’s appalling behavior would be unacceptable toward any citizen in a public forum,” said Runyon-Harms. “But to show this kind of contempt for a Colorado citizen who lost his son in a tragic mass shooting just last summer helps explain the extreme disregard the right wing showed for gun violence victims during this year’s legislative session.”

“Colorado deserves better than Bill Cadman’s caddish behavior,” said Runyon-Harms.
