DENVER: As the national Republican Party continues to reel from the fallout of controversial statements by Missouri U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin on reproductive choice and the crime of rape, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, called on Rep. Mike Coffman to come clean with women voters in his district about his views and past association with Akin.
“We’re calling on Mike Coffman to apologize for his co-sponsorship of the infamous ‘redefining rape’ bill, H.R. 3, with Todd Akin to restrict access to reproductive choice for victims of rape,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Joanne Schwartz. “Akin’s horrifying comments about ‘legitimate rape’ this week have forced attention on the issue, but the truth is, Coffman and Akin joined together to restrict access to abortion for rape victims less than two years ago.”
“Coffman was listed by proponents of the ‘Personhood’ abortion ban as a supporter in 2010,” said Schwartz. “In 2012, he is running from the initiative he has historically backed. But Coffman can’t run from votes he has cast in Congress, or legislation he co-sponsored with Todd Akin to restrict access to reproductive choice for rape victims.”
“Now that Akin’s sickening defense of this policy has become the biggest political story in America, it’s time for Mike Coffman to own up to his record and explain to women voters in his district what he was thinking,” said Schwartz. “If he doesn’t, those same women voters will deliver a message to Coffman of their own on Election Day.”
